I know midi isn't what most of you deal with, but I'm hoping someone knows of a simple quick way to change volume on midi files.

I got a collection of pc board games, and the midi "soundtracks" are very very loud,
I would like to avoid changing the Windows volume control back and forth when using these games.

I am hoping to find a *SIMPLE* free tool that will let me lower the volume and re-save the files.

I did a fast Google, and the apps I looked at seemed rather complex for the simple task I need.
Too bad there isn't a Midi-Gain, like MP3Gain and WavGain.
Does anyone have any advice for me?

Turn down the 'SW Synth' slider in the volume control (system mixer) applet? Is that too simple?

    Ya, it is.

no, what I was requesting in my original post is a way to permanently change the volume of the files themselves, because many of the files were created at different volume levels.
In the course of a game, I am having to open that darn applet a couple of dozen times !!!
    PITA !

If you don't mind command-line tools, you can try Guenter Nagler's freeware MIDI utilities, here: http://www.gnmidi.com/gnfreeen.htm . I think the specific one to use would be midivol... and they can be used with wildcards, as I recall, so you could probably just place it in the directory with the MIDI files and type 'midivol *.mid'.

Ai Haibara, thank you for the link.

This weekend I will try the utility you suggest.

Belated response to let you know, this little utility does just what I need.
Except for a couple files with broken headers, I was able to average out and quiet the music tracks so they don't overwhelm the game sound effects.
So for my purposes, it is the midi equivalent of MP3Gain and WaveGain.

I grabbed some other useful tools from his web site while I was there, too.

    Thank you so much!
