I currently run 2 Pioneer 108's that have been flashed:
A patched firmware (1.14) is available here. This patch is region free (RPC-1), has the rip-lock disabled, and also allows you to burn any DVD-R disc at any speed between 6x and 16x. Patched by >NIL:
RPC-2
I burn Taiyo Yuden Premium 8X DVD-R Media .. and have had ZERO problems burning at 16X. But, i realize that my 108s won't last forever.
Question: Are there any current brand/model Burners, that can be flashed to burn at 16X using 8X media?![]()

Lots of information on modifying the firmware on a variety of drives on
www.cdfreaks.com
Needless to say patching the write strategy of 8x media to 16x has its risks but there is a utility available on that site which will patch the firmware for multiple drives. Mediacodespeededit. -
Just keep in mind that not all media, even media from the same manufacturer, will always have such good results. It is often best to perform a disc test whenever you open a new spindle.
And for what it's worth, most drives will do what your 108's are doing. All of my NEC's (3500, 3520, 3540), an older Lite-On, and a Samsung will burn media at higher than rated media speeds. The NEC 3520 does this with the factory firmware.Google is your Friend
