I have an .avi file and a .srt file that I want to combine using ffmpegx, but if there's a better program to use for this I'm open to other options. My problem is: The subtitles show up in the preview, but don't show up in the final copy after I encode.

In ffmpegx I've been dragging my source movie into the "From" field, and selecting DivX mencoder in the "To" field. I've tried many different target formats as well. Then in the Filters tab, I click the "load subs" button and select my .srt file. After that, I change the Pos to 100 (since 80 is pretty high). I press preview and my subtitles show up just fine, so I press encode. After encoding finishes, the final copy doesn't have any subtitles.

What am I doing wrong? This is driving me nuts!

    Thanks!

It seems to work fine when I try to replicate what you describe.

You didn't mention anything about having selected the "burn subs" option. If you didn't check that option, that may be your problem.

  4. Check your text-encoding settings. It seems mplayer (i.e. previewing) can do auto-detection, but not mencoder (i.e. encoding).

I always open my .srt files with TextEdit, then save them as UTF-8 before encoding to avoid any problem of this kind.

Hm, odd . . . I guess it's just me then. I'll try what you suggested, jpschuck.

When I save it as UTF-8 in Text editor, and then switch to UTF-8 for the encoding method in ffmpegX, the Preview doesn't even show the subtitles.
