  1. Hi all.

I really don't know what's going on here. I just downloaded a *.mpg file. I tried playing it, but all is seem to be getting is aidio. I am not getting any video.

But when I open the file using virtualdub 1.47, it says that i am trying to open an asf file and due to patent blah blah .. I can't open it.

So, i take it that i am opening an asf file. but something seems to be wrong. I tried using asftools, but nothing seems to be working.

I am using ATi File Player to play. Media player is 6.4(win2k default) which i seldom use. Any one knows what am I doing wrong here. I installed almost every codec I can lay my hands on. DivX 3.11a, Krystal and Nimo codec packs also. ;-p

Any help would be appreaciated. Thanks.

  2. Perhaps it was an mp3 ripped with Xing with the wrong settings?

Perhaps it was encoded with TMPGEnc demultiplexed?

Is the file size consistent with the length of play for a video file?

well, because virtualdub complained that it cannot open the file due to M$ patents with the asf file format and blah blah made me believe that it is definately a movie file.
Anyway, the file size is +-120MB and is supposed to be somewhere between 40 - 50 minutes. definately not mp3 ...

perhaps i am missing something? i tried searching for some asf codecs, but can't seem to find any thing.

    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks.

  4. Oh yeah. hope this bit of info may shed some light?

When I load the movie in win media player 6.4, it attempts to download an appropriate from M$. After some waiting, it failed and then proceeded to play the file with only audio. No video at al. When I click File -> Properties, this is wat i saw in the codecs in use dialogue box, under the advanced tab:

    Win Media Audio V8 Installed(Yes)
    win Media Video V7 Installed(No)

so does this mean I need to install win media 7 in order to play it? any work around for this?
