It's hard to say exactly what the max resolution is. Generally you shouldn't expect anything over 720x576 PAL, or 720x480 NTSC to play. Don't count on anything with a width greater than 720 or a height greater than 576 to play. You might find with some versions of the firmware you can get away with wider frames is the height is smaller. Something like 848x368 might play (it doesn't on mine).

Like jagabo says, a few people have been able to play files wider than 720, but the height was reduced to somewhere in the 300-range to get it it work. Your resolution is still too big. I don't remember the numbers, but it's been reported that files with widths in the low 800s and heights in the low 300's will work, but that's about it. You should not ever expect any Divx/Xvid file that exceeds either setting in 720x480 (NTSC) or 720x576 (PAL) to work and just be glad when a few of them do work. You have what is essentially NTSC video and it exceeds both the height and width resolutions for NTSC, so you're out of luck.

The highest resolution file that I played on my 5140 was a 1024x576 XviD test clip that I made from a 1280x720 HD-DivX file.
Don't know if the 5960 will play that resolution or not. -
Figure out the decode chipset used then pull up the manufacturer datasheet. The specs will hint at max resolution possible factored by memory and other components. Memory is expensive. You wouldn't have bought this model if you weren't price sensitive. So add labor and do the homework.

I tried the following Xvid/AC3 AVI resolutions on my recent DVP-5960:
720x480
768x336
800x336
848x368
720x480 played properly. All the rest gave an error message "video resolution unsupported" and no picture was displayed. The audio played though.
All played properly on my old Liteon LVD-2002.
