I have some videos (avi) in 1024x576, 25fps, mp3 audio, divx 4, which will not play on my Philips 5982. It gives me "resolution not supported" message when I try to play them. Clearly I'll need to transcode the files to reproduce them at a lower resolution. The question is, what is the highest source resolution divx file that a Philips 5982 will play? I know it will output at 1080p, but apparently it won't read at 1024x576.

Almost no DVD players on the market today are capable of displaying AVI files in resolutions above 720x576. You can literally count the players that can do this with one hand. You need to find a player that supports "HD Divx". Philips does not make such players at this time. They require a chip capable of decoding high def Divx video and while such chips do exist, Philips does not use them, probably because of cost. The fact that your DVD player can upscale DVD to 1080p has NOTHING AT ALL to do with what kind of video it can accept as input.
