I am trying to save the audio from my donavan frankenreighter dvd so I can put it on CD and on my ipod as its a great concert.

I thought the simple way to do it would be rip to HDD using dvd decrypter, virtualdubmod to save the audio stream as a wav file and then any audio editor (sound forge in my case) to cut the talk out and split it into tracks.

However whenever I use virtualdubmod to create the wav file, no audio editor can open it but it will play no problem in windows media player.

All editors used say it is corrupt or there is a problem with the codec.

I tried some other DVDs to test and it happens on all of them.

So how would you rip audio of a DVD for editing other than using virtualdubmod and secondly does anyone know my problem if thats the best way to do it?

Just my thought... When you use VDM to convert to WAV do you enable full audio processing? Otherwise you may be getting a problem file.

I do the first part a little different. I use VOB2MPEG to convert to one large MPEG file, then extract the audio with VDM as a WAV with full processing. From there I use Audacity to edit the WAV file and either output as WAV or MP3, depending on what I want to do with the audio.

A few tools here for DVD audio extraction which likely use better methods than mine : https://www.videohelp.com/tools?s=10#10

  3. Since you already have the vobs on the hard drive, open them all in DGIndex, and Audio->Output Method->Decode AC3 Track to WAV. Then File->Save Project.

Thanks both for your help, ill give them a go.

    redquz,

I cant recall of the top of my head if I enable full audio processing, I just go to streams and select save wav. There may be more in depth audio selections I need to adjust.

At least earlier versions of VirtualDub will save the audio "as is" but with WAV headers and ".wav" extension. This may confuse other audio apps.

The issue they're trying to isolate is if you just go to "Save WAV", then by default "Direct Stream Copy" is selected, which means you get a file with a .wav extension and that is actually AC3 audio most likely. However if you go to "Full Processing", then by default, PCM WAV (No compression) is selected. Then when you go to "Save WAV" everything should be sweet.
    If in doubt, Google it.

AHA! You fellas are legends, not only did I find other ways to do it, but you have solved the VD problem. It indeed was the direct stream copy/full processing mode thingy.

Thanks heaps, happy camper over here!
