Blue screen Of Death

My PC keeps on crashing when I use my DVDrw & CDrw drives. I reformatted in november as I could not burn anything, only rip and read. All seemed well but just recently every time we use the drives up comes the blue screen of death It's an evesham PC and my 3 years ran out in december (very handy). Before I go and buy two more drives I wondered if anyone could throw any light on the matter the pc dosen't seem to like windows media 11 so Ive gone back to 9 but it still crashes. Got shut of some freeware and scanned and had all updates on everything. Would taking out the drives and putting them back help or maybe see if I could update the drives. I suppose I could find time to phone them but I think it depends on who you get on the other end of the phone

don't know exactly as the screen is only on for about 10seconds but I have just noticed the bottom
line is a row of 0's with 8E at the end and then some other numbers in ()'s. Its never up there long enough for me to read

Hardware driver error perhaps? That's what I recall 8E being. Could also be PIO vs DMA mode on the drive channel.


Before you change anything, do a Registry backup of your system with this tiny app - Rdilly.

All you have to do is unzip the app, click on rdilly.exe and it will create the backup.

The VB script below will force XP to check for DMA drive channel capability on the next boot. Just run it (download and double click) and restart your system.

Another possible culprit is the ASPI drivers, usually called Winaspi32, or something similar if you're using Nero. We'll look into that after you try the above.

Almost certainly an issue with the drive hardware and/or its driver(s).

In the kernel world, everything must behave exactly as defined. If any driver does something that the OS deems wrong, the OS issues what is known as a "bug check" - the BSOD.

The error ending 8E is KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED

I had a similar problem that went away after I replaced the power supply. Something to think about if nothing turns up on the software front...

if the fault occurred in November, you still could qualify as a warranty repair. Its only January...
its not likely the drives themselves died simultaneously; but when you reformatted, you set the clock back on all the updates etc too- are you sure you got them all? were there any firmware updates for the drives? your best bet may be to get somebody to redo your redo... or it could be something absurdly embarassingly simple

All seems fine and dandy, for now. Apparently it was my Pinnacle Instanrwrite software. After the first dozen crashes and sent reports Mircrosoft identified it as Pinnacle I/W so I removed it and hey presto I can now rip, burn and play cd's. Not tried dvd's yet. Hopefully all will be well.
