I installed a DVD ROM drive in a computer that has Windows 98 SE. When I insert a DVD into the drive I hear a clicking noise for a few seconds and than nothing. When I go to "MY COMPUTER" there is nothing in the DVD ROM DRIVE. When I click on the DVD ROM DRIVE ICON it gives you the error message that there is no media in the drive like when you try to access your 3.5 floppy and theres no disk in it. Is there some sort of codec or something that enables your computer to recognize that theres a dvd in the drive?
Thanks

No, the drive should be able to see the disc. You only need a codec to play the content. Are you having the same problem with data discs, audio cd's etc... ?

No problems with anything else ... Audio CDs play, software cd's work, cd-r's work ... the only thing im having trouble with is DVD's ... And these are original dvd's ... not dvd-r copies or anything like that.

This is slightly puzzling. Something similar happened with my 'Terminator 1' 2-DVD pack. While the main movie disk was recognized immediately, the second disk containing special features had a problem. Rather suddenly, the problem disappeared.
@F1118: Do you have DVD data disks that you could try with?*** My computer can beat me at chess, but is no match when it comes to kick-boxing. *** -
It sounds like it could be a problem with the laser. I believe there is a different laser for reading cd's. As pbhalerao says try some dvd data dvd's if you have them (like the type you get free with computer magazines).

I have a similar problem.
I had been successfully reading and burning DVDs with two separate external USB DVD RW drives until something happened yesterday that suddenly prevented my DVD drives from recognizing DVD disks (They both still recognize CDs okay.) If I insert any DVD (whether blank or a commercial movie, etc.) into either DVD drive, I now get an error message saying, "Please insert a disk into drive [L: or J: depending on the drive]." Windows Media Player will recognize the drives if a CD is inserted but not if a DVD is inserted. Similarly, Nero reads and burns CDs okay in both external DVD drives but will not recognize inserted DVD disks in either drive. I can't think what I may have done in the last 24 hours to cause this change. I've uninstalled and re-installed the drives, and I've tried updating drivers (no updates appeared to have been necessary), to no avail. That both drives are similarly affected suggests to me that the problem lies not with either drive (installation, drivers, connections, etc.) but rather with the system. Any ideas?
The two external USB DVD RW drives referred to are the LG GSA-5169D and the Mad Dog Multimedia Dominator USB 2.0. I am using a stand-alone desktop powered by a Pentium 4 (1.8GHz), Win XP Home SP2.

Some cable's dont have that marker notch on them ... something to newbies want to watch out for ... but in your case ... it's reading cd's so it's in the right way .
Double check those jumper's while your at it .
Psu ... change the power coupling .
