    Try re-registering quartz.dll
(search for it here - it's been mentioned in several threads)
If that doesn't do it - it's a codec problem. Use codec sniper or equiv to spot the culprit, remove and reinstall.
Try playing your AVI with VLC. It has its own codecs, and don't rely on DirectShow.

    Tried playing with VLC?
Is it one particular AVI, or is it all avi files?

Grab the tool from this site : http://paul.glagla.free.fr/filmerit_en.htm

And check directshow once more ... codec sniper isnt that handy ... read the page on how it works .

    I'll ask this one .

Codec pack's ... get rid of them ... install only those you actually need .
Ffdshow ... you got ... get rid of it ... install and use only when required ... it can cause problems .
Vga driver's ... are they up to date ... driver's can go off without being influenced ... it happen's .

May also want to do a registry scan for problem's .
