I am trying to convert rmvb to either avi or preferrably dvd. I have tried DVD santa, cucusoft video converter and winavi video converter, open video converter and all have crashed at some point during the encode. What is going on? I have tested the rmvb files and they all work fine. This is what I have installed so far on my fresh reformat.

    Real alternative 151
    Real media splitter
    Divx 6.3
I can install community codec pack but i have tried that before the reformat and it didnt work. I heard a couple of things. 1, its the codec and 2, its my harddrive. which is correct?

BTW whenever I convert avi to dvd using these programs, they work. I thought I should add that. Winavi use to work, but all of a sudden, it just started crashing on me.

    Can anyone help?

Also wanna add, I just tried total video converter, and it crashed again.

I am starting to thinking it is hardware.

  3. If all the programs crash at the same point in the video, and other videos convert without problem, there is likely a codec problem. If they crash at random times you may have a hardware problem. Could be just about anything though. You'll have to do some testing to track down what component is failing.

C2D E6300 runs pretty cool but video encoding is one of the most strenuous tasks most people do. I would suspect the CPU overheating first. Run a few instances (because you have two cores) of one of the CPUBurn programs. These will stress the CPU even more than video encoding. If the CPU is overheating overheating it will crash. You many need to clean out the heat sync. Maybe the CPU fan died. Or maybe you need to replace or install more case fans.

If the CPu isn't overheating the next thing to check out is memory. There are many memory test programs for that.

All the programs actually do crash around the same point. It is always near the end of the encoding, when it reaches around 95% completed. But I have real alternative, real media splitter and i just installed k lite. How can it be the codec? Isnt the codec just real media?

  5. In all likelihood your RM file has some corruption near the end and that is causing the RM decoder to crash.

  7. You could try converting the video in two parts. Everything from the start to just before the point where it crashes, then everything just after the point where it crashes to the end.
