The player is fairly new and used to play everything we fed it.

Since upgrading our DVD recorder downstairs to a newer Panasonic model, the Toshiba doesn't seem to like the discs anymore. The discs start playing, but partway through it begins to freeze ...exactly like a satellite signal interruption. But the disc plays fine on the Sony player downstairs

    Here are the specifics:

    Problematic player: Toshiba SD-3990
(Laser lens just cleaned prior to test today)

    DVD Recorder: Panasonic DMR-ES15

    Downstairs player: Sony DVP-NS50P

    Media: Taiyo Yuden TYG02 8x DVD-R

Is there anyone here with this same Toshiba model that has seen something like this? I'd like to exhaust all possibilities before drop-kicking it into the dumpster

I have a Toshiba 3900, that began to do the same about a year ago. I tried the dvd cleaner route with little success. So as a last ditch effort I opened the player up and used 91% Alcohol and some cleaning swaps(not Qtips) and cleaned the laser and also blew out the inside of the machine. It has worked flawless since the major cleaning. Good Luck

    Thanks 'Slide. I'll try that

BTW, here's a pic of the unit:

Thanks, Bodyslide. That did it! It's playing discs it had trouble with before 8)

When I had it open and had the top disc stabilizer removed, I noticed the laser is recessed inside its mounting frame slightly. It's not much, but apparently enough to keep a laser lens cleaner disc's spinning brushes from extending down into the area where the lens is:
