  1. I got a new upconverting Samsung 860hd dvd player which is DivX certified complete with logo on the player to make it official.

However when I download any divx avi file and copy to a CD-r it does play but will stop and pause for roughly +-10sec and resume skipping that amount of time.

Tried various divx files and same thing.

Play it on the computer no problem.

Is there a special way to burn it to play divx? Do you think its the player?

BTW- the picture is outstanding. Dont know if the player is possibly upconverting the divx file to 720p even.

Any help would be appreciated or if it should be posted to another forum.

    Thanks

it is the player IMO (partially) , i tried one of these and it seems that after the great samsung upconverting players of a few years ago -- they have been getting poorer ....

then again -- it could be bad media and/or a bad burn process. try another brand of cd or dvd disk and burn at a lower speed ...

  3. The requirements to be Divx certified are pretty low. There are many Divx settings and features that can cause problems on most players. Also, Divx refers to the video compression -- it's possible that the player is having problems related to the audio.

    This web site:

has information about the Philips DVP 642 Divx/DVD player. Much of it is applicable to other players too. That will give you some ideas.

  4. Thanks for the info.

According to the manual it states about divx:

support divx 3.11 divx 4 with mpeg4 simple profile divx5 mpeg4 simple plus additional features such as bi directional frames. Qpel and GMC also supported.
    Xvid mpeg4 compliant

Also just wanted to be sure how it should be burned. I just copied the file to CD. Does it have to be burned a specific way?

I just use Nero's ISO CD or DVD templates. You might try buring to DVD instead of CD.

One other thing that isn't discussed much is the way the audio and video are multiplexed together. Typically, you have a frame of video and a "frame" of audio equal in duration to the video frame. Then the next frame of video and audio, etc. But the data can be multiplexed differently. A file might even have all the video first, then all the audio at the end. That doesn't present a problem when playing the file from a hard drive, the drive can seek back and forth very quickly to get the audio and video data. But CDs and DVDs don't seek quickly so this will cause problems.

A simple solution to this is to re-multiplex the audio and video with VirtualDub. Just Open the file, put both audio and video into Direct Stream Copy mode, then Save the file.
