Try WinDV
Camcorder should be in "VCR" mode.

Unfortuately you'll probably need to install a driver for that camera's Firewire input before any DV capture app will find the camera. I don't know if these drivers are generic or not. Good Luck! (in the positive sense

OK, that sounds reasonable. I have not found a driver for the FW on Canon's websites. It is possibly the worst website I have ever seen when it comes to support. Still hope that somebody with Windows XP SP2 has done this with this exact camera and can tell me ALL about it!

Is your IEEE-1394 port on the motherboard or a PCI card? Has the port worked with another device?
You should have the following or similar in your device manager. Is it working properly?
You might want to delete this and let it reinstall on reboot.

This should be of help:

Or try google: MV750i canon driverUsually long gone and forgotten -
OK, I tried the website with no luck, I deinstalled the drivers to the IEEE card and installed them again. No luck. What am I doing wrong?

Well, shame on Canon for not providing manuals for free. I just looked and you have to buy them.
However, they do state this:
The driver for downloading digital video data from the camera must support the interface card, not the camera. As long as the card supports IEEE-1394 (firewire) data transfer, the computer will be able to download data from the Canon digital video camera using the driver for the card. Models equipped with the separate USB port come with the Canon Digital Video Solution Disk, which contains USB drivers and image editing software for still images only.
i.e., you don't need additional software. Windows provides the drivers.
So, some troubleshooting....
1. With the camcorder turned OFF and the computer turned OFF, connect it to the PC via Firewire
2. Turn on the computer
3. When Windows has finished loading, turn the camcorder ON
Do you hear a ba-dip from the computer?
If not, then either your Firewire interface on the computer is damaged, the cable is damaged or the interface on the camcorder is damaged. (My money would be on the latter which is probably why it was sold in the first place....)
If you do hear the ba-dip, that at least means the computer has recognized that something has been connected. You should either see a little icon appear in the system tray (bottom right of the screen on the computer) or a window should pop up called Digital Imaging Device. If neither of these things happen, look in My Computer for a new folder called something like "Canon DV Camcorder".
Also, try Windows Movie Maker to see if it recognizes the camcorder (if you heard the ba-dip etc).John Miller -
If that doesn't get results try the camcorder and cable on another computer that is known to work with another camcorder. This could narrow the issues to the camcorder or cable. Then try a different cable.
