In most of my applications and on the internet when I try to "open" a video or "save" a video the dialogue box takes a minute or so to open. At first I thought the applications were hanging but if I wait long enough the dialogue box does open.
For instance when using VideoReDo I hit the big OPEN button or use file/open and nothing happens for over a minute. Then the dialogue box opens and all works fine. If I drag and drop a video to VideoReDo it opens instantly.
On the internet when downloading a video If I right click and choose "save target as" it takes a minute or so for the dialogue box to appear.
I'm not sure when this started. I use several computers and I just now realized that this is a consistant, repeatable problem on this computer only.
Ideas?
Added Later:
Just found out that if I log in as a different user the problem vanishes. That means I can probably just use that new log in and delete the bad one. Still I would rather just fix the problem. Any ideas?

Do you have any network drives mapped to drive letters?
When Windows creates an open/save dialog, it has to populate it with a list of all the drives on the computer. This includes any shared network drives mapped to drive letters. There is a timeout period - Windows will wait that long before deciding the drive isn't available. About 5 to 10 seconds is typical.
So, if at work (say), you have a network drive mapped to Q: and you are on the network, things will be quite responsive. Now, if you are at home or travelling, Windows still thinks you have the Q: drive, so it will try to connect to it. Since it isn't there, you will experience a delay equal to the timeout period.
The more network drives you have mapped to letters, the longer the whole delay.
The solution (that I use) is to simply create a shortcut on the desktop to the network drive (using the full UNC, not a drive letter) and not map any drives to drive letters.John Miller -
From the looks of the computer you describe in your profile, I suggest that you donate it to the Smithstonian and get some money from that dog and buy a modern new computer that runs on electricity.

Thanks Johnny M
I only had one mapped drive and I just disconnected that so that is not the problem. I have three computers on my desk (I use a KVM switch). The computer I have this problem with has 2.07 GHz.
The one in my profile works fine for my non-video stuff so I won't be getting rid of it soon. -
Did you disconnect it or did your unmap it?
Even when disconnected, Windows tries to find it (that's been my experience).
Go to the command prompt and try:
and see if anything is listed (connected or disconnected).Code:net use

cmd/ net use reports "nothing in list".
I created a new user and I'm migrating over to that. All seems to work fine now. -
if the last time that open or save box appearing was used to access a drive on a network, windows will slow to a crawl, because it is trying to display the last path that was used, which was a network drive.
does that even make sense?I am just a worthless liar,
I am just an imbecil -
You nailed it. I had gotten into the habit of saving stuff to a network drive and had no idea it would have that effect. After saving to the local drive the problem is gone.if the last time that open or save box appearing was used to access a drive on a network, windows will slow to a crawl, because it is trying to display the last path that was used, which was a network drive.
Thanks All
