  1. I recently started had problems writing DVD folders to a DVD. For a while I could write data (similar size burn), could burn CD's and Image Burn seemed to work OK. However, no go with DVD folders. I got pissed enough that I formatted and loaded everything up again. Same problem, except that I started having errors with any burns to DVD.
The issues were with Nero 6, Image Burn, Clone DVD2, and a few program built ins. I use Memorex DVD's +R. The burners I had on the IDE were two Samsung SH-S162L, set up master and slave with the most recent firmware. At one time I had an LG GSA 4163 in IDE with one of the SH 162L. which also started to error. The original set up was the LG with an HP 400i and this set up worked for a long time, burning with either burner, until the 400i started to screw up burns.
I took the two Samsungs out and put the LG back in and I'm back to burning no problems.
Question, I like to have two burners for copying purposes and in case one fails. I think the Samsungs were a POS burner, but the LG seems great. Is it a problem to use 2 on an IDE (seemed fine before)? I'm looking at picking up another burner, LG GSA-H22L and don't want to spend if I can expect more errors. The thing is the set up worked without the Samsungs.
    Thanks for any help.
The board is an old Asus without SATA and only two IDE.

  2. I worked on this problem and came to two solutions:
1- Get rid of the Samsung SH162 writer - POS. I bought a second LG and everything works fine on 1 IDE cable - set up master slave.
2- Connect 1 DVD to IDE as master, connect the second DVD to the hard drive IDE cable as a slave. Make sure the HD is set as the master. Do not use cable select.
Nobody responded to this note, so I expect this may be a unique issue, but just in case these options work.

  3. Samsungs probably dont have buffer underrun protection. I have a new one & it doesn't. They work fine, you just can't be doing a lot on the computer when using it.
