  1. what the hell!

everytime i need to fix a file I'm always coming to a challege with myself. There seems to be a stupid problem that I have time for. anyways, I have this quicktime file that when I play it, there is no sound and its just a white screen. I'll get a pop up during playback that says "this file doesnt have the right compression to play this. well anyways, the file is:

    Shelly.mov

    Video Formate: H.264
    File: Quick Time
    Audio: 48 mhz
    RunTime: 10 minutes
    File Size: 274 megs

I search google for a free codec that will support this, well i came along ONE codec. When I try to install it, all it did was came up with a black screen and then disapper. I restarted the PC and tried using QuickTime and VNC (MPlayer) and still nothing.

    What do I do?

more than likely it's encoded using Apple's H264 codec, install Quick Time Alternative (with all the options checked) or give VLC a try (VLC has the x264 codec built in).

x264 isn't a codec, it is an encoder only and therefor won't help for playback. VLC does use libavcodec that supports h.264 decoding. Certainly it can decode anything that Quicktime can. mplayer also uses libavcodec though and if it won't play in mplayer, then it won't play in VLC.
