divx dvd player

Hi, my brother bought a DVD player as a present today that says it supports DIVX. So if I have a file that is .avi and needs DIVX to view it on my computer, can I just burn that file straight to the DVD R and I'd be able to view it?

I just bought a burner recently and I know i had to encode the avi file to make it mpeg 2 , author it, and then was able to burn with nero but it took a while and the quality wasn't that great (not bad, but eh). Just wondering if I could skip all this with a dvd player like the one above

You should be able to just burn the file(s) onto disc as data (data disc). The only problem you may have is whether or not the files meets your dvd players specs.

You can also download and burn the divx test cd from here: https://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers

That will give you an idea of what file types the player actually supports.

1.) Give us the make/model of this DivX capable DVD player.
2.) Load the AVI in question into GSpot and post a picture of the results here.

The one bought was Philips Progressive-Scan DVD Player
Model: DVP3040. I am willing to take suggestions on other players or features to look out for. I will do the GSpot thing later on

Is there something specific I need to look for in the GSPot thing (like a certain kind of codec or something)? Since I will be doing multiple files and they might not be all the same

I don't know much about the Philips DVP-3040 otherthan I think (stress think) that it handles DivX/XviD files in the same manner as the Philips DVP-642 ... which if true is not the best thing as the DVP-642 is not the greatest DVD/MPEG-4 player.

As for your MPEG-4 file ... If it is DivX and not XviD then chances are it will play ... if it is XviD instead of DivX then it is "hit or miss".

There are a whole new "crop" of MPEG-4 capable DVD players out now using the latest MediaTek chipset. Generally speaking these work "best" for DivX and especially XviD files. A popular model that is cheap is the Philips DVP-5140 which can be bought at WALMART for about $50 US Dollars.

You will find that the Philips DVP-5140 totally blows the DVP-642 and DVP-3040 out-of-the-water in terms of playback quality and compatibility when it comes to MPEG-4 files like DivX/XviD files.

As for what to look for in GSpot ... it's just easier if you post a screen shot here and then I or someone else can comment on it.
