    PLEASE provide more information.

What is the error message you are getting and in which application(s). Have you tried multiple applications like more than one media player (for instance have you tried VLC media player as opposed to just the one built-in with Windows).

What videos were working and now are not? All videos? Only MPEG-2 vidoes? Only MPEG-4 videos? Only DV AVI videos? etc.

Hopefully you can see my point ... we need a lot more information than you have provided in order to even begin to suggest what is wrong.

Oh and the BIG question ... did you make any changes at the time you got the video problem? I mean like did you install or un-install any software or codecs or made any registry changes or virus scans etc.

ok well it seems to be mainly the avi files that aren't working. i use media player classic to open these files and it was working fine. now i have a error message saying "Media player classic has encountered a problem and needs to close. we are sorry for the inconcenience", and so on

i change it so the files would open on windows media player but i still have the same problem.

Try another media player first and see how that goes. I suggest VLC Media Player for starters.

Other option: Reinstall FFDSHOW which should fix DivX and XviD playback (knock on wood).

Still though I can't help but think that SOMETHING happened ... you must have installed something be it as simple as an "update" (you know the Windows automatic UPDATE utility) or codecs or software etc.

You could also reinstall the latest divx codec.
