If you can hear the audio effects but not other sounds, there's something wrong with the audio, and not anything a codec can cure. Perhaps it has another audio stream with all audio?

If the audio is AC3 5.1, then it sounds like your center channel where the dialog usually resides is off or set wrong. I'm assuming a computer here. AC3 5.1 is common with DVD movies.

If you just have stereo speakers, it should have been downmixed to stereo format, and that would blend in the center channel. Check your audio card settings and see if it's set for 2 speakers. And your player program should have some selection for audio format.

If the movie isn't AC3 5.1 audio but something like MP3, then you likely have the wrong track or the audio was created improperly.
