  1. How do you find out what profile a video has been encoded in?
I have some xvid videos and I would very much like to know if they are within simple profile or advance simple profile standards, or if they are in any other profile(s)

Is there a way to figure this out? What app should I use?

  4. Gspot and mpeg4modifier both seem like useful apps but they do not tell me the information i need.

Yes they do. Resolution, frame types, bitrates, etc. Exactly what more were you after?

Perhaps they don't have a Simple profile, Advanced simple Profile indicator, but they may well tell you just the same. What is it that defines Simple Profile and Advanced Simple Profile ?
