I bought an external usb 2 LG (GSA-2164D) 16x DVD burner which came with NEro 6. Now when burning films to DVD it takes a bloody age. Usually between 1.5-2 hours for a 4,7gb single layer DVD+ disc. IS this normal or is there a setting I am missing which is making this thing take so long. I can't recall it taking so long even on my old 4x DVD+ drive and I have heard times of 10-15mins quoted elsewhere. Is it because of USB 2.0 which I got instead of firewire. Help, I'm so fed up with archiving it's doing my head in.

Are you sure it's running in USB 2.0 mode? That sounds more like USB 1.1 times.

And you are using Nero. Are you sure Nero isn't doing it's typical re-encoding and that's what's taking all the time?

    And no, that's not normal.

16X DVD media should take about 6 minutes to burn, though 12X is sometimes a better choice, depending on the media used. If you are just burning the VIDEO_TS folder, use ImgBurn instead. It won't re-encode.

    And welcome to our forums.

4x takes around 14 minutes, so you certainly have a problem. Even an old 1x re-writable I found in the cupboard took less than an hour.

To see if you have USB 2.0 in your system: 'Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager>Universal Serial Bus controllers' and look for a 'Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller. The important word here is 'Enhanced'. If you see that, you should have a USB 2.0 setup. Any of the rear USB jacks on the computer should work as USB 2.0 then. Occasionally the front USB jacks are USB 1.1 on a few systems.

If you don't see the 'Enhanced', then you either don't have the proper upgrade, or you need to add a USB 2.0 PCI card.

The SP1 update should have USB 2.0 capability built in.

A DVD burner can never go slower than 1x, which equates to ~1hr., so if it's going longer than that, it must be doing something else in addition (like RE-ENCODING ). Use an authoring program that's smart enough to leave good streams alone when you tell it to...
