  1. I recently reinstalled Windows and all of my codecs. When I try to save an avi in Vegas or virtualdub it no longer shows me the Panasonic or Canopus DV codec I used to use. I've tried ireinstalling the codecs and apps but they are not showing up in any app I have
    what is causing this?

Check that there are no empty or otherwise corrupt vidc entries in your registry.

  3. There were a few empty entries and my codecs reappeared upon deletion, thank you very much.
For future use, how do you know if the vidc entries are otherwise corrupt?
will the corrupt ones always be empty or are there other signs?

Basically any entry for something that doesn't exist (dll it is pointing at is missing). The missing codec problem as far as I know relates to only blank entries though.
