My apologies since this must have been asked many times before!
in xp I simply use RUN->devmgmt.msc and I can then view installed audio/video codecs.
Now, I must be blind this morning, because I just cant figure out how to do this in Windows 7

There is a program called DirectShow Filter Manager that you can use to list all filters installed

Bear in mind that the list via Device Manager shows VfW codecs only.
