My operating system is Windows Vista. I'm trying to capture footage from my Playstation to the PC, I'm doing this by using a USB device and then recording the footage directly into VirtualDub. However, I do not have any good Codecs, I have tried a few, but when I want to import the compressed footage into Windows Movie Maker for editing the codec cannot be recognised by Windows Media Player and so I can't edit the footage. This is beginning to get on my nerves, I've been restoring my system time and time again because my PC is flooded with crappy codecs that refuse to work. So far the only codec that has prooven useful is the DivX codec. The other problem I have is with the audio compression. Because I use Vista I can't use the MP3 codec, blame Microsoft for that. I need to compress the audio so that the video and audio will remain in sync, because when I record into VirtualDub, the audio starts to fall behind and is no longer in sync with the video, this too is getting on my nerves. It would be much easier for someone just to give me the best combination of video and audio codecs that work in Vista and are compatible with Windows Media Player. Please help.

    Thanks.

  2. Try HuffYUV (lossless, not much compression), Lagarith (lossless, better compression than HuffYUV, may not be fast enough), PicVideo MJPEG (fast, lossy, reasonably good for video capture, but not free), Cedocida (DV), Panasonic DV codec.

If you really want to use WMM, try capturing with the Panasonic DV codec. WMM should accept that format, but WMM is very limited with the type of files it can work with. It can output DV AVI, though. And if you are doing editing, you don't really want to use a highly compressed format like Divx or Xvid. DV is 'made' for editing, those others are not.

Or you could use HuffyUV for capture. I'm not sure if WMM accepts that, though. I would use a different editing program that is more flexible as far as input and output. The downside of DV is that it uses about 13GB/hour of disk space. Huffy uses even more, if I recall.

Vista doesn't have any problems with MP3 that I'm aware of. Installing Lame MP3 can be a pain, though.

Your sync problem sounds like the result of dropped frames during the capture. What 'USB device' are you using?

    And welcome to our forums.
