I'm having problems with Xvid seemingly uninstalling itself (atleast it acts that way) however the files are there. The avi's still playback but it gives me codec errors upon opening them in WMP(Windows Media Player) also if i try convertering them into a different format the audio and video is out of sync. Yes the audio is VBR MP3 however the more pressing issue here is why it keeps removing itself as a codec. here's the specs on the software versions

    Xvid - Kopei 1.1.2 (Nov 2 2006)
    WMP - Ver 11
    WinXP - SP2

Thanks in advance for any assistance you may provide.

I would suspect WMP as the problem. It has a few. Try a different player. Media Player Classic if you like WMP, or VLC, which doesn't need an installed codec for Xvid.

MP3 VBR will usually cause problems with conversions to MPEG-2 with most MPEG encoders. You didn't say what format you were trying to convert them to.

Other than that, what specific codec errors are you getting from WMP?

Give VLC a try. It's often a good test to see if you have a corrupted codec. The Xvid codec can get corrupted, the same as most any other codec. I hope you haven't installed any codec packs lately. That's a fairly common cause of messed up codecs. If no, try deleting and reinstalling the Xvid codec.

MPC is usually a good player, if it has the proper codecs installed.

If you need to use MP3 VBR audio with MPEG-2, you can extract it with VirtualDub or VD Mod as a WAV file, then use that with your encoder to often avoid sync problems. This guide from jimmalenko may help: http://members.dodo.net.au/~jimmalenko/ExtractAudio.htm
