  1. I have a movie that can be played by VLC PLAYER only, but not with winodws media player, powerdvd. Neither tmpgenc nor mpegencoder converts the clip. GSPOT gives that it can be readable with divx and xvid, which is installed already (as per gspot).

How to convert this avi file which can only be played with VLC Player?

    thanks

Does it open with Virtualdub? If so you can frameserve to TMPGEnc.

Run the video through GSpot (version 2.52 or better) and post a screenshot of the results here. Blank out the path and filenames if you prefer. That might help us figure out why the video is only viewable in VLC.

Also note that VLC does have a way to convert/transcode videos. From the File menu, select 'Wizard' (or hit Ctrl-W). That should bring up the 'Streaming/Transcoding Wizard.' Select 'Transcode/Save to File' and click 'Next >', then you'll be given more options to convert the file.

  4. ZippyP, It does not open in virtualdub. It opens and shows only one clip.

Ai Haibara, used gspaot v2.21 (i do not find 2.52 version) and here are the screen shots

You didn't happen to install any codec packs lately, did you? I'm guessing you have some corrupted codecs. That's one of the things VLC is good for. If it can play it and your other programs can't, that often indicates a problem with your installed codecs. There may be nothing wrong with your file, just the system codecs trying to read it. Gspot doesn't always show when a codec is messed up.

Try codec sniper to look for and remove broken codecs on your system.
