    Hi everyone,

Sorry if I am posting this in the wrong place. I have been hearing about HD VHS recorders
and players. Also states they will play analoge tapes as well.

My question is how accurate a statement is this. And could there really be good high def 720p
1080i quality from a high def program recorded to VHS tape?

If so I would really be interested in trying one out.

Anyone have any knowledge, links, or experience in this matter.

You would be really helping me out,

    Thanks,
    Steve

Oh so you mean D-VHS ... this is for recording HDTV broadcasts ... but most HDTV is copy protected except for so-called "local channels". So you can record your local HD-ABC channel for instance but you can't copy any of the HD-HBO channels.

Anyways a D-VHS will only record in HDTV when the source is HDTV.

You can't take a non-HDTV source and copy it to HDTV. Any non-HDTV source will copy as VHS or S-VHS depending on the tape and the mode you have it in.

Mitsubishi has a D-VHS that can be bought brand new for around $200.00 but it does not have a HDTV tuner built-in so you would have to use a cable or satillite box that has FIREWIRE output.

The JVC seems to be about the same as the Mitsubishi but does seem to have more output options. I've been looking into the Mitsubishi and although it is unclear from what I've seen I think the Mitsubishi needs a HDTV with a FIREWIRE input whereas the JVC has component and HDMI outputs making it a bit more functional but at a higher cost.

I know the Mitsubishi (which can be bought for around $200.00) has FIREWIRE IN and FIREWIRE OUT so if your TV has BOTH of those inputs/outputs and a OTA tuner built in then you should be A-OK for local channels like CBS, ABC, NBC, FOX, etc.
