    hi

i have a sries of video 8 camcorder tapes that i'd like to transfer to a digital format in best possible quality. i also have a sony hdv camcorder.

if i were able to input teh video 8 via say canopus through to my hdv camcorder, would it upgrade the footage to hdv in teh process.

if not, what would you recommend?

    thank you!

You've got to be joking, right????

As the old rule says......."garbage in = garbage out". No, your HDV camcorder will not upgrade your SD footage to HD. It will only pass it along as SD footage. Your best bet is to preserve the best quality in standard definition and let your TV or DVD player upconvert.

  3. I can tell you what I made some years ago when I bought my first DV-camera Sony TRV30. Via the firewire in the DV-camera I transferred my VHS and Hi8 tapes to the computer.
I first tried to put these old tapes on DV-tapes directly in the camera. Later I discovered that if I just used the DV-camera as a middle-point I got better quality on the DV/AVI-file on the Harddisk.
Perhaps this is not immidiately visible but when I took a still picture from the AVI-file and enlarged it I could see that there was difference.

Capture as DV-AVI to your computer with the canpous, you don't need the hdv cam. Encode and author standard DVD compliant disc and let the player do the rest, it's not going to get any better than that unless you do some filtering but that's really doesn't have anything to do with your question.

Save the DV-AVI files for use in the future as they will be of better quality than the DVD and a more suitable format for future editing etc..
