  1. Hi there,

I have two unconnected (I think) problems with sound on DVDs. Firstly WinDVD Platinum 7 does not playback sound on any DVD disc I try and play. It does do so on Video CDs but not DVDs. Anyone know what this could be. I seem to have everything installed and all audio settings in WinDVD itself are set correctly.

Secondly I have been using Clone DVD Mobile to copy DVDs onto my Archos AV500 player. This used to work fine but recently I have re-installed my PC and upgraded the version of Clone DVD Mobile which I was using. Since then whenever I try and copy a DVD using this program it seems to work but I cannot playback sound.

When I try and load the file in Virualdub it gives the error about variable bit rate. However it won't let me re-encode the file because it says it cannot decompress the audio.

The odd thing is that Clone DVD Mobile asks you to select the device (Archos AV500) to which you want the DVD encoded so you would think that it would be able to generate a compatible file! I even tried Clone DVD on my laptop to encode a DVD but it did the same thing. It could be that the same errors manifest themselves on both machines - if so I expect others to have experienced them as well. My Archos is still fine as it plays files I encoded before I upgraded to this version of the Clone DVD program.

I'm a bit lost really. I have tried uninstalling the K-Lite codec pack from my system. This has had no effect good or bad. To further confuse things windows media player plays both DVDs and the Clone DVD encoded files with sound! So obviously it has the right codecs installed.

Can anyone suggest where I might be going wrong with this?

Audio playback from dvd's may be ac3 ... install ac3_filters ... codec section and try again .
Clone DVD Mobile ... Dump it now ... Grab VideoVault from derrow's website for ifoedit , and the patch .

As for opening those files in vdub ... it was vbr audio , which it dosent like ... cbr is fine ... but considering those dvd's where converted using clone dvd mobile , then they would be produced with vbr audio .

Vbr is variable bitrate ... cbr is for constant bitrate audio (the better of the two) .

  3. Thanks for your prompt reply. Am downloading Video Vault now. I haven't tried it before. I liked Clone DVD Mobile because it was quite quick. I'm hoping Video Vault will be as well!

Still no joy with WinDVD. I downloaded the ac3filter program and installed it. Still no sound from WinDVD. Not sure if I need to adjust the settings in ac3filter config or anything but it seems that is not where the problem is.

Any other clue as to what it could be?
