I have been using version 2.5 of vob2mpg (with the great command-line support) to convert to MPG and I have noticed recently that certain DVDs (all unprotected) get outputted with either loud static as the sound, or the sound is fine until you play it in Windows Media Player 11 and fast forward (and then you get the static). This doesn't happen with all my DVDs.

I saw this was reported in some postings on this site, however, I did not see any final word on it. Any ideas?

    Thanks!

Point One : Windows Media Player is one of the worst players to test anything in, and any results or issues with the playback experience should be treated with caution as they will, in most cases, be down to WMP being a POS. It doesn't even playback flagged 16:9 mpg files at the correct aspect ratio half the time.

That said, AC3 or DTS audio, is played back as raw files (i.e. not decoded) are basically pink noise. It will sound like static, and if you have it up loud enough, will blow your speakers.

Perhaps VOB2MPG is having an issue ripping the audio correctly, or the original audio was flawed, and now WMP is having problems decoding it correctly.

First thing to do is ditch WMP for testing and playback. Try any of the following

    Media Player Classic (MPC)
    VideoLan Client (VLC)
    KMPlayer

and see if the problem persists. If it does, and the audio is AC3, demux it, run it through AC3fix, then mux it back in and listen again.
