  1. After spending almost 24 hours on this, I give up and need help- oh, and sleep.

Had a VHS to be edited. Popped it in the VCR/DVD Recorder at work. Then tried to edit the VOBs. Had to rip them to AVI. This created an MPEG2 file that had the audio intact. However, after trying to put it in four different editing programs, the audio kept getting muted or deleted.

Finally was able to rip with a different program, then used Ulead Movie Factory to edit it, and then reauthor back into DVD. Audio's intact, but the picture is terrible.

Isn't there anything that allows for VOB edits without conversion? What's the simplest way to do this? This project was for work, but I can think of several movies I own I'd like to edit scenes out so my daughter can watch them.

You're doing everything wrong. Wrong software too.

Try this to rip the disc data
    http://www.digitalfaq.com/dvdguides/edit/dvdrecorder/recorderedit.htm

Then this to edit the properly ripped disc data
    http://www.digitalfaq.com/dvdguides/edit/editmpeg/removecommercials.htm

Then re-author to a new DVD, this is one option
    http://www.digitalfaq.com/dvdguides/authorburn/tda/tda.htm

    That should do it.

I recently did something similar with NeroVision Express by using make a new movie, and split an item rather than cut. I split it at the commercials and delelted them. Worked and the video synced, getting the timing just so without losing any of the show was tricky.

    CKSMartin,

Hi. I recommend the MPEG Video Wizard for you.

Isn't there anything that allows for VOB edits without conversion? What's the simplest way to do this?
You can edit the VOB files in MVW-DVD directly without conversion. You can also add multiple VOB files in DVD Maker and edit the DVD menu, then export the DVD Folder quickly and without re-encode.

    Wish to help you.

That has to TMPGenc DVDauthor. It lets you to import DVD videos as they are, and you use the start stop marker to specified what you want, export, burn and watch. If this is what you want, Go to tool section and read the TDA guides, and get adstional help/clarification here.

Do you have access to a DV camcorder with analog-to-digital passthrough? If so, I would capture the VHS tape through the camcorder (via firewire) and edit the resulting AVI file. This should give you the best quality. I have done this many times. You need lots of hard drive space too.
