doesn't mpc and directshowsource require real alternative?
maybe mplayer. -
MPC can use real's dll's directly or via dshow using the included splitter. Real Alt is basically just real's dll's bundled with an external version of the same splitter and directshowsource() just means those same dll's and splitter.
mplayer requires real dll's to decode anything that VLC can't handle. For anything that VLC can handle, like VLC it uses libavcodec (older real video and cook audio), faad for aac and liba52 for AC3 decoding (some older real files use AC3).
Basically with a propritary format like real video, you can't escape real, at least not until someone reverse engineers it (like with cook audio).
