I was wondering which is better for backing up dvd movies w/menus etc. NeroRecode2 or Convertxtodvd? Does NeroRecode2 degrade the audio in order for a better picture? I backed up a movie with NeroRecode but the sound is not as HQ as the original dvd. At the moment I have not tried convertxtodvd but will at some point. Thanks

NeroRecode2. ConvertXtoDVD is an encoder for converting avi files to DVD. NeroRecode2 will transcode in the same manner as DVD Shrink. If you do it properly, the audio will not be touched.

What about DVDShrink for those DVD9->DVD5 moments, and DVDDecrypter/DVDFab Decrypter for DVD5->DVD5/DVD9->DVD9? Nero is (possibly) good for burning stuff to disc - leave it at that!

NeroRecode2, when used to reduce a DVD9 to DVD5 size, uses the original encoding of the disc. It scans through it, looking for data it believes you won't miss, and removes it. This method is much faster than completely re-encoding from scratch. It is the same method that DVD Shrink uses (and is written by the same author). It also means you can preserve menus, extras etc. if you wish.

ConvertXtoDVD is designed to convert avi files to DVD format and structure. It does this by encoding the video from one form to another. It will not preserve menus and extras.

In short - two different programs, with two different purposes.

Transcoders do not touch the audio in any way, shape or form. You can delete some audio if you like but....I'm afraid either your ears are lying to you or someone has lied to you.

It's likely that you need to adjust the Dynamic Range on the player or set it to "Dialog".This problem is real(not a lie) and it effects DVDShrink as well,it effects some DVD's when you backup only the movie:

Thank you for all the info. One more question with converting avi,wmv to dvd now using NeroVision Express 3:

    1. what are the automatic setting for audio format I have DolbyDigital AC3 5.1 & 2.0 and LPCM - which is the best closly to the original audio?

    2. Is it best to leave it Automatic for sample format?

I've figured a way albeit challanging to get the better video by turning quality setting to custom and adjusting the bit rate up to the closest to 4.7GB.

If they are downloaded avis with mp3 audio, then 2 channel AC3 will be more than enough to preserve what little dignity is left in the audio after mp3 is through with it. 192 kbps will be fine in most cases. If the original quality is higher, use 256 kbps. Sampling must be 48kHz for DVD.

There is little that is challenging about your method. You should always use a bitrate calculator when encoding, and set the bitrate accordingly. Anyone here who uses a stand alone encoder does this regularly. If quality is really of concern, ditch Nero as your encoder.
