I have a video in AVI format that I want to split it into several separate scenes to remove the footage that I don't want, and then join the scenes together. Changing from one scene to the next will be quite abrupt at times and I’d like the transition as smooth as possible. How can I make each part fade into the next with regards to the audio and the picture?

You need a video editor. There are tons of them out there. You can use the free virtualdub for things like trimming and applying filters.
But for special effects like fading I believe you need something like Vegas or Ulead Videostudio. Those programs have the special effects in them.
Or you can even use windows movie maker. It only outputs to wmv or dv-avi (the camcorder format - large files). Thats a free microsoft program that can read avi and do editing.Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw? -
You can do the whole thing (editing AND fading) with virtualdub (or one of its variants) and AVISynth. I would recommend virtualdubmod as it can interact with AVISynth a bit better using its script editor.
If in doubt, Google it.
