I don't understand why there is no easy way to edit a video file from a DVD
about 20% of the time, i can drag the .vob off the computer and edit it directly in vegas
the other 80% of the time, either Vob2MPG will either work or won't work, and then i'm stuck with converting to large .avi flie which seems like a waste (which also sometimes doesn't work correctly)
anybody can help or have suggestions on how i can work with video files from DVDs?

So many reasons.
1. VOBs are containers that contain video, audio, subpictures and nav markers. They are designed for playback, not editing. They can be very complex, depending on how they were authored.
2. Mpeg2 is a very poor format for anything but what it was designed for - playback.
3. Vegas' support for VOB importing is limited to VOBs created by those crappy DVD video cameras, where the structure is very simple - one video and one qaudio track only.
In short, you are trying to use source that was designed purely for playback as a basic for editing. There are better editors for this that Vegas - editors dedicated to mpeg2 editing. However they don't have all the features that Vegas has.
So either convert the footage into a more edit friendly form, change your software, or live with it.Read my blog here.

But Guns1inger, even converting the .vob to mpg is never a simple process

Converting VOB to MPG should be a simple matter of demultiplexing the VOB file using one of many applications that can do that, such as TMPGEnc.
Also, TMPGEnc can import video straight from a VIDEO_TS structure (even straight off the DVD), and render it in any number of video file formats including AVI, WMV, and MPG.
If you don't like the idea of re-encoding the video, but still want to do frame-accurate cuts, I've found VideoReDo suitable for that.
