Can vDub capture in 16:9 aspect ratio?

I can do a 16:9 capture with MMC, but I'd like to try capturing avi at 16:9. I did try using MMC 9.02 to capture avi in 16:9, but the audio was way out of sync. It seems vDub does a better job at syncing the audio.

    Thanks,

  2. What are you capturing from and what is the final destination for the video?

If capturing DV, there's no such thing as capturing 16:9 or 4:3 - it's just what ever it happens to be. Whether the editing software can then tell the difference between DV footage tagged as 16:9 vs 4:3 is another matter.

If you can elaborate, that would help.

    John.

    What I am doing:
I am capturing direct from a stand alone DVD player. The movie is in 16:9 ratio. I know this is not the recommended way to get a movie off a DVD...normaly I rip it.

However, while I am capturing this video, I am going to be adding in additional audio (commentary) the same time the movie is being played/captured. I have the audio equip to mix the two seperate audio.

Since the source is a 16:9 DVD movie, and I am playing it back on a LCD widescreen tv, I would prefer to keep the 16:9 ratio.

Like I mentioned before, MMC9.02 does capture mpeg2 in 16:9 ratio. I confirmed this with a test capture and then ran the test mpg through DVD2AVI and it picked it up as 16:9

But I do prefer capturing to AVI and converting with a software econder (for best results). This is why I am asking if vDub can capture in 16:9

    Thanks

  4. So after capturing the AVI, will you convert it to MPEG2/DVD again? If so, that's probably the point to ensure the video is flagged as 16:9. What encoder will you be using?

Yes, I will convert to DVD Mpeg2 with TMPGEnc

I also received this reply from the unofficial vDub forum:
VirtualDub will capture whatever image size your capture device supports. There is no need for a 16:9 button.

  6. Exactly - the frame size in terms of pixels is the same whether it is 4:3 or 16:9. A flag in the DVD file tells the DVD player what to do. A widescreen TV *should* detect a flag in the signal, too, and switch modes accordingly.

Somewhere in TMPGEnc should be a setting to tell it to create the final video with the 16:9 flag set (I haven't used it so I can't tell you where to look).
