I've now got my basic process to copy my DVDs in divx format to play on the Xbox360.
- Dvd to hard drive using DVDDecryptor in stream mode.
- VOB2MPG from .vob to .mpg
- VDub with null transform to crop and save to divx.
All is working perfectly. The first couple of movies were fine everything looked fine. However, this latest movie is in 2.35:1. When viewing, everyone is just a little too skinny. I think its because everything thinks its 16:9. Anything thats round is slightly oval. Divx defaults to in/out square pixels. But I have little clue on how to use it for anything but the defaults.
I get a little lost going back and forth. Could anyone put together a list of what the PAR numbers would be in using the free divx codec? At least for anything not 4:3 or 16:9....

Could it be as simple as putting in 2.35 and 1 for the in PAR and closest preset in the out?

If you VOB file is 16:9 set Format In to 16:9 NTSC (if 4:3 set it to 4:3 NTSC). Set the output to Square Pixel. Enable the "Resize to [___] pixels wide" option and set the width you want. Pick a resizing filter -- Lanczos4 is usually best.

I am having a very similar problem. I have an avi (with an h.264 video inside) file with a 2.35 to 1 aspect ratio. when I run through virtual dub using the 720HD profile on the Divx 6.8 codec i will get an error that the width isn't right. if i change the resolution to 1280x720 manually (the original is in 1980x800 resolution) the output file comes out 16x9 not letterboxed. I don't really know why. If i choose the 1080HD Divx profile it comes out correctly (2.35 to 1) but at a higher resolution and thus a much larger file. My goal is to use the 720p profile as my TV and media player can only output 720p anyway.
I don't get why virtualdub throws the first error about the width being incorrect and then begins encoding if i manually change the resolution in the codec tab on the advanced options dialogue. And then once it finishes why the output is 16x9. I do apply the subtitle filter to add subs but I believe i'm doing that correctly and don't see why that would matter. I'm not using any other filters.
Really scratching my head here. Love virtualdub but I gotta figure this out. -
Is it really that simple? If the source is 16x9 I can leave it at 1280x720 but for a 2.35 to 1 source I just need to change it to 588? I will give that a shot. Thanks!
