  1. I was just given a Dell 400 Mhz pentium 2. It has windows xp, a 40 gb hard drive and 256 mb of RAM. It will take care of all my portable computing needs with one exception - even Ulead 8.0 requires an 800 mhz pentium 3.

Is there a program out there - preferably freeware - that will work on a pentium 2 that will allow me to edit video files, add transitions, titles, subtitles, etc? I do not have to render it on this computer - when I get home I can just hook it up to my network and copy the file to my desktop.

Would I get more out of this computer by putting windows 98 on it or by putting windows xp on it?

Since you have XP, you may try Windows Movie Maker and/or VirtualDub. This depends on what you want to do.

But your machine is really old, so do not expect miracles. Editing video files requires lots of disk space, and probably you do not have a lot of it either.

I think this Dell machine is a laptop/portable. right?

If it is a desktop you should consider upgrading the CPU.

Running XP with 256mb RAM is slow. Either update the RAM or
    downgrade the OS.

Try the Dell support Forum to see if you can get more info on
    the upgradability of your machine.

See if you can find the manual for the motherboard. If it has a 100 MHz system bus, you can probably run at least an 800 Mhz Celeron in that board, with an adapter. There are lots of companies that make upgrade kits, like this:

Allows you to add a socket 370 processor to the slot 1 of the old school PII.
