I have just changed to XP from WIN 2000 and my HDD(WD 160GB) won't operate. I can see it in disc management with a red cross on it, but there seems nothing I can do to get it recognized. I have lots of stuff on there so I don't want to format. What is the problem here and how do I fix it? BTW the drive worked OK till the change.

You likely have to install a SATA driver for the SATA controller. Can you check in your Device Manager and see if you have a yellow checkmark beside a 'mass storage device' or similar? If so, that's what needs the driver. If you didn't install the driver when you installed W2000, that may be the problem.

Thanks redwudz I worked on this problem till 3am in the morning and still got nowhere. I've found that the drive is recognised by the computer when booting up, but not by windows. In the device manager there are no signs of it. If I go to disc management it says it is "missing" I would try the driver suggestion but need more technical advice on how to go about it. Can someone help me with that, thanks.

Thanks redwudz you have solved my problem, and possibly restored my sanity. I was not looking for the "mass controller" item, but after I read your post I noticed it and updated the driver, and "bingo" the HDD appeared. Thanks again for your help.

Don't forget a couple of things:
1) To update your "Computer Details" in your VH profile.
2) Buy your wife some flowers and beg for forgiveness...There is some corner of a foreign field that is forever England: Telstra Stadium, Sydney, 22/11/2003.
Carpe diem.

I like 'possibly restoring sanity'.
Win 2K isn't so 'user friendly' as XP and needs a little help at times. Don't ask me about W98, I still have configuration nightmares.
Anyway, good deal that you solved the problem.
