  1. Newegg has drives from Samsung, Liteon, Pioneer.....Prices aren't dramatically different.

What model(s) are recommended? Last drive I bought was an IDE based NEC unit which worked out ok.

Get the SAMSUNG S302B drive from Newegg.

Be aware that certain sata controller chipsets on motherboards could render compatibility issues. If your motherboard has INTEL ICH7/8/9 controller chipset you should be fine. NVIDIA SATA controller chipset you'll need to download the latest drivers from their website and if you have VIA SATA controller chipset then the SATA DVD burner will not work correctly. You'll have to buy a SATA PCI CONTROLLER card w/the SILICON IMAGE 3112/3114 chipset. The SATA controller chipset will determine whether or not a SATA DVD Burner will work correctly. RAID will have to be disabled as well in the motherboard bios for the drive to work correctly as well. Don't use the JMICRON chipset as well.

If this information is too technical for you to understand then just buy a PATA INTERNAL PIONEER 115 drive.

My $0.02 I go with SATA on Hard drives and IDE on burners - Pioneer only.

  4. Motherboard I'm looking at uses AMD SB600. It supports Raid0, 1 and 10. I assume Raid0 means RAID off.

  5. Pioneer...

Raid 0 means 2 Sata Drives as one >. got it? double the speed, double capacity and double the failure points.
Raid 1 is mirroring, 2 drives as 1. this is safe, if 1 drive goes bad...you have the other "mirror" and you can rebuild the raid again.

You'll need to find out what SATA controller chipset is on your motherboard. Just make sure RAID is disabled in your motherboard BIOS. What's the brand of your motherboard? ASUS? MSI? GIGABYTE?

I'd second Budz on the Samsung 203 recommendation. I picked one up a couple of weeks ago and have been very happy with it. My ASUS mobo uses the ICH9 controller.

    A couple of reviews:

  8. Thanks, I ordered the 203N. I don't think I'll ever use lightscribe but this unit ships free so it's cheaper then 203B.

Amazing deals on DVD writers nowadays. About a week ago I got the Samsung 202J from newegg for $25 w/free shipping to replace my fading $175 pioneer a06 of 4.5 years. Newegg even threw in the same nero OEM disk that ships with the retail version, which to my suprise is excellent software considering the crapware that you usually get (I cherry-picked the install BTW). All in all, an amazing deal!!! Good luck with your new drive!

WD 1600AAJS is faster than than normal SATAII drives. Some have compared it's speed to the Rapture series. They have reduced my transcode speeds by 15% compared to normal SATAII drives.
