BREAKING NEWS: J.J. Abrams to Produce "Trek XI"
J.J. Abrams, producer of hit shows Lost and Alias, as well as director of the upcoming Paramount film "Mission: Impossible III," is slated to produce the next Star Trek feature, according to today's Daily Variety.
Although the official Paramount press release should follow shortly, word about the Abrams project surfaced this morning in the daily trade paper. He will be writing the script with Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci who penned "MI: III." Although Abrams is not yet confirmed to direct the project, he isn't ruling it out either.
The proposed story will focus on the early days of James T. Kirk and Spock, including their first meeting at Starfleet Academy and their first mission in space.
Although it's not confirmed, Abrams' producing partners from Lost, Damon Lindelof and Bryan Burk are cited as being producers on the untitled "Trek XI" feature. (This project is separate from the previously rumored script developed by Eric Jendersen and overseen by Rick Berman.)
This new film is currently targeted for a 2008 release.
We will be publishing the official Paramount press release once it is available.

As a rule, I love all things Trek, but I have my doubts about this one. The premise isn't necessarily bad, but looking at it from a Star Trek perspective, I'm not overly impressed with the past works of the identified production team.
Let's hope they prove me wrong."Shut up Wesley!" -- Captain Jean-Luc Picard

Yeah it looks like ENTERPRISE all over again
Actually I got the Star Trek 6 special edition dvd and one of the bonus features said they were going to do that exact story line for star trek 6 but rejected it.
I really hope they don't do this. Star Trek is about the future. Not the history of the future. It should be going FORWARD not backward.
At least its not dead yet. That much is hopeful.Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw? -

I think the idea sounds a little lame - I mean, we know that Kirk and Spock make it, so if they are in any life or death situations we know they make it (sorry if that is a spoiler for anyone
)... But at least Star Trek isn't dead. And it's not going to be 15 years before we get to see it again.
Hopefully this will be a good thing for Star Trek, and maybe draw in a larger audience."Don't try to be a great man. Just be a man, and let history make its own judgment."

there's no way in hell Shatner and Nimoy can play Kirk and Spock at Starfleet acadamy -- they're ******* ancient now.
still, I'm sure they will both be in the movie, probably at the end and the beginning and the whole damn thing will be some stupid flash-back.
this'll definitely fall under the category of "Rental" for me.
I liked Enterprise, and I thought it was an excellent concept, but ultimately it wound up being quite poorly executed.
I'd like to see more of the post-Borg ST universe now.
A new TNG flick with an ensemble cast from TNG, Voyager, and DS9 would be good.
When Nemisis was originally announced, it was supposed to include characters from TNG as well as Voyager -- Admiral Janeway's brief cameo on a view screen was far from what was initially "promised"...
Voyager ended quite badly. Instead of ending the series, they simply stopped making it. The finale was a joke.

Why can't they do another TNG movie?
I was hoping they were going to do a Search for Data or something after all B4 has all Data's memories and stuff or have I missed something here? -
I think another TNG movie would be great, but after Nemesis bombed, I doubt it will ever happen. I would think a new Star Trek movie with a whole new cast, new (starship) crew, new ship, etc. would go over better. I would have even liked to have seen an Enterprise movie. But I guess they are hoping to draw in a newer audience with a more adventurous story, while hooking the older, die-hard Star Trek fans by making it about Kirk and Spock. I thought VI was a great movie, and they should have left it with that for any/all of TOS cast. The way they killed Kirk in Generations was.... horrible. On the SE Generations DVD they show the original ending to the movie, and I have to admit, what made it to theaters was better than the way they wrote it originally, but still lacked the quality death scene that Kirk deserved.

Why would they need a new crew??? They can easily mix and match between DS9 and Voyager. And you can throw in TNG for good measure even if they wouldn't be the main focus.

I think TNG would be a better cast. I also think they should work hard on the script to revive what people potentially thought after Nemisis. I did think Nemisis was fairly good though.
I'm still waiting for them to link "The Late Gene R.'s" original concept that V-ger (Lost Voyager probe) became the Borg. It'd give that "OMG - what the heck did we send out in the galaxy years ago?" feeling. When the maker joined with V-ger, that was the first similation. However, there's a tie to the whole thing that Big Gene took to his grave. [i]The point & place where V-ger similated a being or beings to become the collective known as "The Borg". The writers for the series after Gene passed seemed to mess this thought & concept up because they didn't think it could hold weight. Luckily, I feel Star Trek First Contact allowed a potential way for them to be able to ressurect the original idea.
Any other thoughts? -

I mean, the UFP isn't exactly small, and Starfleet consists of more than a half dozen starships, right? Maybe they should go even further into the Star Trek future and make it a show about the Enterprise F... Or G. And if the movie does well they could think about spinning it off into a TV show. Make another fresh start, like they did with TNG. Just my opnion
And I'm sure every Star Trek fan has his/her own opnion of what would be best for the franchise
I'm jut glad that it looks like Star Trek isn't going away for 15-20 years, or longer. No matter what idea they come up with, I'll be at the theater opening day

John DeLancy Q did not find humans interesting until TNG. Although there was that other Q that was with Riker's ancestor, but he was banished in an asteroid during Archer and Kirk's time. Of course that wouldn't have excluded Suzie Plakson Q or Corbin Bernsen Q from visiting.

Q introduced the Borg to the group of TNG. supposedly it was to show that the Q also had problems with them, but could not ultimately defeat them. Kind of a paradox where the monster is pushed away by those who should be strong enough to defeat, but left to be defeated by it's own maker.
Again, the premise WAS THERE, but it was horribly botched because Hollywood writers can't be left alone and un supervised. It's like leaving a gay man at a run down cabin in the woods. You come back and there's a mini-mall with starbucks and the house is made over to look like Martha Stewarts Spring bungalow. -
Well don't forget Seven of Nine's parents met the borg apparently WAY before the TNG crew did. If Voyager had the science logs why didn't the Enterprise D crew?? All they would have had to do was do a federation term search for artifical lifeforms and they would have found all the cataloged anamolies. And boom - all the secrets.

Who else think the writers went to pot after Roddenberry died? :handraise:

Voyager was mapped out too and it was planned to have it put into action, but he passed away before that even came around. The prequel 'Enterprise' was not even an idea of Rodenberry's. Roddenberry also had several other shows he was working on before he passed away, and even a few other spinoffs from them mapped out.
