I have a movie, and .avi file.

And the audio is way off sync with the movie.

I know I can extract the audio using ffmepgX, but is there a way, I can extract just the video as well?

Like, so I have two files, just a video file, and just an audio file, so then I can import them into iMovie, and try to snip it so it goes back insync?

    Is this at all possible?

    Thanks,

Yes, you can export the video from the AVI
file to MPEG-4 9.mov) with the "Passthrough" selector
checked, which will extract your video and place it into
    a QT friendly wrapper.

    for fixing,
Either QT Pro or ffmpegx, take your pick.
Me, I go with QT Pro.
Open both files Audio and Video.
    Select all Video, copy.
Select Audio, add scaled the video to audio.
    Save re-combined file,
after playing to make sure its in sync,
to whaterver I need. If you need it in iMovie,
export from QT Pro as a DV Stream for import into iMovie.

If you end up needing to snip it, a few frames, then you can do this
in QT Pro, but I'd try the add scaled first. That usually fixes it for me.

    Load AVI into ffmpegX,
Video Tab/Video Codec = Passthrough (ffmpeg)
Audio Tab = Uncheck Encode audio
    Hit Encode

It will only work on AVIs.

    If you have a MOV, you need to;
Open the MOV in QT Pro,
    Window Menu/Show Movie Properties
Click on the Video Track to highlight it
    Hit the Extract button
File Menu/Save As, for a MOV
    OR
    File Menu/Export
Export: Movie to Save as AVI
Hit the Save button to save the Video track as an AVI using the MPEG Streamclip QT Plug-in
Which is reason #6 to have QT Pro.

You really should get QT Pro

I will give it a try. Thanks for the help. I'll let you know if it works or not. Hopefully it will.

Yeah, I have had numerous problems before, and the first thing anyone ever says is open QT Pro. Haha. I will one of these days.

I really should. I think you have even told me to use QT Pro before. hahaha

    Thanks again Tugboat!

    I actually have another question...

Now I a have the just video file, and the audio only file. How can I combine them using ffmpegX? I know I can do it using D-Vision, but iDVD isn't fond of muxed files.

Should I just add the audio and video into iMovie and go from there?

thanks, sorry I have no clue what I am doing. haha.

reason #7 to get QT Pro.....!

I believe ( only use iMovie 4.01, hadn't had a need to upgrade)
but iMovie shouldonly accept "joined" files. If you bring them
in seperate, iMovie might keep them seperate...
thus the reason iMovie prefers DV Stream files...

    Try this:
    muxing avi
just use the steps of muxing, without worrying about
    the avi already having audio....

I actually recently took just a video and audio, and imported them into iMovie(latest version) and it kept them as two seperate files, but when I would hit play, you could see the video, and hear the audio, and they were fine. And I shared it with iDVD and actually just finished encoding/burning it onto a disc, and it is perfect.

But what I just did, is took the audio and video for this current movie, and started the video in QT and started the audio in iTunes(since it is in mp3 format) and they were still way off. There was only about a 1 to 2 second difference in the elapsed times, but they were about like 8 seconds or so off.

So that is why I was thinking about importing it to iMovie to start the movie a tad bit after the audio to try to get them in sync.

    Any thoughts?

Yeah, I will put together however much it costs and try to purchase QT Pro in the next couple of weeks.

    I am just really broke.

    thanks though!
