importing a video from a Sony HDR-FX1

When I transfer a file from my Sony HDR-FX1 camcorder it transfers it in as a WMV file. Most of the software I am using supports AVI files. Is there a way to switch it to import as an AVI? Would the file be smaller as an AVI or WMV? Which would have the best quality? Thanks!

My crystall ball told me you transfer via firewire using WMM. You need to change the output to DV AVI (or transfer with something else , WinDV(freeware) for example). In fact setting the output to wmv is reencoding as on the tape the file is stored as DV.
wmv - smaller, avi - best quality.
