    Hi

I'm trying to convert an .mp4 to AVI.

TMPGenc won't open it, VirtualDubMod won't open it, Womble won't open it.

    MPC will play it.

MPEG Streamclip will open it, but when I try to export to AVI I get an error: invalid frame rate.

I get the same error exporting to anything else.

If I open it in mp4ui and click on the video track and Export I get an error:

    Exception: MPEG-4 internal
    Reason: Couldn't read sample 1

    What's going on ??

    Thanks

What Baldrick said. And a MP4 is already a type of AVI. MP4 is just the name of the container, it doesn't really tell you anything about the format within. Drop it into Gspot (V2.52) and it should tell you the audio and video format it is.

Then SUPER or DivxToDVD or other programs may be able to convert the file to the format you want.

mp4 is not a type of avi. They are two different containers. GSpot I don't think supports mp4, you would need to use something like Media Info. If mp4UI doesn't like it though, then it is probably isn't MPEG-4 Part 2, so it is most likely AVC.

Super got it working - didn't encode very well, lots of pixellisation esp on the end titles, but it's better than nothing

Oh yes Mp4Cam2AVI would work well with nero digital files. But sometimes when i try this with other mp4 which I don't know what are within it results in an avi file that doesnot play. Dropping this avi file into VirtualDubMOd and the mod says something about H264. The output avi file is useless anyway for this case.

I stand corrected. I found this page about container formats that makes it a lttle more clear, at least to me:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_container_formats

Wouldn't it be nice if an .mp4 was one type of file, and an .avi another, and if you're software could play one .avi it could play every other one, and it wouldn't matter what codec you used to create it ....
