Anyone know much about this, or other tray to tray recorders? I'm leaning to getting a combo recorder HD, and also a standalone duplicator. Someone said this tray to tray might be able to get a large DVD onto a single DVD without the crappy quality I get when going dvd player to a DVD recorder. thanks!

I wouldn't expect to copy any Commercial DVD with copy protection to start with as the DMCA does not allow selling such things. Even Go Vidoe who used to sell a dual deck VCR that could copy Macrovision protected VHS doesn't sell them anymore. For large DVD to DVD 5 use a computer for best results.

From this review: http://www.soundandvisionmag.com/article.asp?section_id=3&article_id=1138&page_number=3 . I see it apprears to only copy single layer discs (DVD-5). So it apparently can't transcode a larger DVD-9 disc to a DVD-5. I don't see much use for it except as a duplicator. You could do that with any computer and two DVD drives. You may be looking for a hardware transcoder that works like Shrink.

This appears to be one hardware transcoder, but the cost is about $1000US. http://www.sonic.com/about/press/news/2000/april/nab_ice.aspx

thanks red, that ends the discussion. anyway, a duplicator and a combo Recorder/HD, was what I was going to get anyway. Just wanted to spot check this option.

I am going to buy this recorder soon.

It's a perfect option to backup my home movies from my DVD camcorder.

The direct disc copy function appears to do bit for bit copies which is nice. However, after reading the manual, I can't see any reason why you could not record in real time by playing a disc in tray1, and recording it in disc 2 at your desired resolution... i.e. play a dual layer disc and copy it on to a single layer, of course you will have to create your own menus and it will be reencoded and won't be a bit-for-bit copy.

However, and form of copyprotection and forget about it.
