kids are pretty rough on everything
a few things you could try:
is there a remote control stuck in the couch? perhaps this is sending a open tray signal
try tugging on the tray gently...perhaps the kids pushed it in and it's skipped a tooth making it think it's not closed all the way
google for similar incidents and remedies

  3. turn it off and close it yourself (it won't damage it) then turn it back on and see if it open/closes properly.

The player needs to replaced. What is happening the drive door is not making contact to the switch that lets the player know that the door is closed or the switching transistor has malfunctioned.

One more thing you could try is resetting the unit by unplugging it for around 5 minutes. Plug it back, and hopefully it works.
