Hello
Im editing a couple of home movies that i captured from VHS using an Haupppauge pci card.
I have just notice this wierd problem when importing a .mpg into Premiere 2.0, the quality is already degraded. In the preview window i can easly see that some parts of the video are Extremely Blocky, and other areas seem to have major color issues. The video basically lookings like it was encoded with a Very low bitrate encoder.
When the video is exported, all the issues that could be seen in the preview are now in the final product.
I just do not understand why the quality of the mpg video gets degraded when i open in premiere. I can seem to find any setting to fix this problem.
Even thou I have found a solution to fix this problem. By using an .avs syth pluging for premiere, an frameserve the mpg file in. I would still like to know what is causing this.

crappy built in mpeg2 decoder? or does it work fine with other mpeg2 sources?
-
Premiere wasn't designed to decode Mpeg2..
Personally, i'd use VirtualdubMpeg2, and recompress the video back out to DV compression, using the free Panasonic DV codec..
Import into Premiere and have fun..
Not the best scenario, but what can you do.
Good luck!!!! -
I assume that your Mpg capture looks great before importing into Premiere? Or does it already appear degreaded. And thirdly, premiere + Mpg = not good situation. Premiere as most NLEs are intented for DV material or AVI from analog source. GIGO always apalies in video work.
No DVD can withstand the power of DVDShrink along with AnyDVD! -

To aviod this problem when working with mpgs I'll stick importing the mpgs via Avisynth scripts into premiere. Problem Solved.
thanks for the info!

Maybe it was your Premiere project setting, did it scale while decoding?
"Haupppauge pci card" was a PVR? Or was this a software encode?
What were the encoder settings vs. the Premiere project file settings?Recommends: Kiva.org - Loans that change lives.
