Some of my Final Cut "friends" decided it would be a good idea to send me .mov video files in DVCPro 50 and I need to get them into Premiere without spending any money. Any ideas?

Which version Premiere? DVCPro25 is essentially the same at the digital firewire stream level as consumer DV format or DVCAM. Ask how these files differ if at all from *.DV under Quicktime. It should be the same thing.

DVCPro50 (4:2:2) is usually decompressed to an uncompressed SMPTE 259M SDI transfer and edited uncompressed.
    see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SMPTE_259M

I'm unaware as to how DVCPro50 is handled by Quicktime under Premiere other than as an uncompressed stream.

    I'm using Premiere CS3.

I can't get DVCPro50 to play in Quicktime, VLC Player, MplayerClassic, or imported in Premiere. The file is HD (1440x1080). I thought it would have to be DVCProHD but in every file properties box I look at, it shows up as DVCPro50.

Premiere throws an error when importing stating that it does not have the codec. I've played the file on a Mac but it refuses to play on Windows.

My experience with DVCPro50 is limited to its definition as a tape format and output from the machine as SDI for uncompressed editing. So all I can do is point you.

Mainconcept has a transcoding codec for DVCPro25/50. I assume digital format specification for DVCPro50 has resulted from the P2 card and MXF container format.

Best places to ask are in FCP or Premiere CS3 forums. Or call Adobe and/or Panasonic support Monday morning.

CS3 has no direct support for DVCPro50

I've never dealt directly with SMPTE 314M which defines DVCPro25/50 as a data structure.
