    Hi everyone:

I am using TMPGEnc to make a MPEG2 video file. The video source's aspect is 16:9 and I want to keep this ratio. So, I chose in Setting the aspect of 16:9. I left the size at 720 x 480. The video looked funny. In addition to the black top & bottom, there were also the black sides - left and right.

I tried increasing the width from 720 to several higher numbers (multiple of 8, of course). TMPGEnc gave me error messages saying that the width was not acceptable for MPEG2.

Would someone please tell me what number I must choose for the width? And, how can I save the setting for future uses?

    Thanks

720 is the correct width -- but set also your source file setting to 16:9 IF it is 16:9 ... if it is letter boxed - you will have to crop it and then stretch it ...

Thank you for a quick reply.

If 720 is the correct width, how come the video looks funny on the little screen when I start the process? There are black parts on both sides of the pictures.

Make sure you have the source and output both set to 16x9. There's the source tab for 16x9 and the ouput tab for 16x9. That way you shouldn't have a problem.

What are the specs for your source ? Most AVI files that have a widescreen aspect ratio are not 16:9

Wow! Thank you very much, both of you.

I looked at the tabs in Setting and saw "Advance" and under that tab, I saw..."Video source setting" and..."Source aspect ratio".

    Thank you!

  7. If your source is a Divx AVI file set the Source Aspect Ratio to "1:1 (VGA)" and the Video Arrange method to "Full Screen (keep aspect ratio)". Then encode as 16:9 720x480 MPEG2.

    Thanks guns1inger

My video source's aspect ratio is 16:9. It's not an AVI. I think I have found the answer for my project.
